• During First year of engineering keep more focus on the core subject like EGD (Engineering Graphics & Design), Manufacturing Process & Elements of Mechanical Engineering. Clear all the points related to any subjects discussed above.
  • Before completion of second year of engineering select your field of interest (What field you choose if you will get job offers from different segment of mechanical industry) i.e. Industrial engineering or Automobile engineering or Thermal engineering or Design engineering etc. this will help you after completing of your four engineering course.
  • Make neat & clean notes of all the subjects especially for those subjects which is your field of interest.
  • Main important thing is focus on your GOAL don’t divert yourself with anything. Set your mission (What you want to do), goal (how you get what you want).
  • Explore www.freshersworld.com, www.sarkarinaukriblog.com like sites regularly. This will help you to understand the industries requirement and lot of things related to jobs like number of vacancies, number of subjects need to read, frequency of the job published etc.
  • Be in touch with your seniors they will better guide you regarding subjects as well for help you for the job planning.
  • After entering in third year of your engineering course, first thing you need to do started to read the research paper of your favorite subjects for e.g. if your favorite subject is manufacturing process, do google it as research paper on emerging trend in manufacturing process.
  • Attend some engineering conferences as well paper presentation symposiums in IIT’s, Bit’s & in Nit’s. This will help you to understand the real meaning of mechanical engineering.
  • Additionally you can get practical training (Auto-Cad, Pro-e, Catia, PDMS, Boiler Maintenance, Design of Heat Exchanger & NTU Calculations etc) from top notch training institutes (ISO certified, Placement assistance).
  • Apply for Job fairs held in high reputed colleges.
  • Follow your seniors who has got jobs & work for some company, they may be refer you.
  • In the last year of engineering make sure you don’t have supplementary in your account.
  • Keep focus on newspapers as well jobs portals Some engineering firms call the engineer for the internship kind of things.
  • Always be in contact with your college Training & Placement Officer (TPO). Because they have good links with companies HR and in if some urgency is there in some company they may be directly refer you.

·         If you are not placed by college start your search related to your field of interest
·         After B Tech you can do a lot of things as discussed below:

Ø  Go for M.Tech (With Gate score only)
For this, you need to prepare well for the entrance exams to get admission into a good college. GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) is a national exam conducted in India which can fetch you admission in IITs, IISC or NITs and many others. If you will get good score in Gate exam then chances might be there you will be selected by any PSU.

MBA is the right choice for career enhancement. You may specialize in your area of interest which may be the all-time popular fields like HR, Marketing, Sales or the new growing domains like Digital Marketing, International Relations etc. CAT (Common Admission Test) serves as a gateway for an MBA at the IIMs and many other leading institutes. Some other popular exams are XAT (Xavier’s), NMAT, SNAP, CMAT, TISS, IRMA etc.

Ø  Short Term Job Oriented Courses
There are various short term courses and diploma courses you can opt for after your B.Tech. It can be a certificate course in Auto CAD, Solid Works, Ansys, Catia, NX, PRO-E etc
Some more courses are there, many engineering people don’t aware of those courses. After completing these courses for sure you will get a job. These courses are certificate course in Robotics, Diploma in Boiler maintenance, Certification in NDT (Non Destructive Testing), Pipe Line designing (PDMS), and Certification in HVAC (Heat Ventilation & Air Conditioning)

Ø  Prepare for Civil Services(IAS/IPS/IFS)/Engineering Services (IES)
You can go for Civil Services as well for engineering services. Civil Services/Engineering Services is not just about cracking an exam and then clearing an interview, it judges you on everything you can think of, who you are and what you stand for!
You need to put your complete focus in addition to lots of determination to prepare for Civil Services/Engineering Services Examination. For that you need to - Believe in yourself.

Ø  Entrepreneurship-Start your own Business
In today’s scenario startup is trending more as a fashion than a career option. Being your own boss does not mean you can ignore work and life would be easy. Starting your business and making it succeed would be the toughest of all the things you can do. It will have ups and downs every new day. Maybe you would not get any client for the whole year. Be ready for the challenges and immense learning if you are determined to be an entrepreneur. There is lot of thing for a mechanical engineer. IT depends on the person to person that they want to start a business in their field or will want to go out of field i.e. technical business or non-technical business.
A mechanical engineer can open their own workshop (Automobile service station, Welding shop, Machining shop), Small industries like (Cotton bag manufacturing unit, Utensils manufacturing unit, Jute Bag manufacturing unit)

Ø  Join the Defence - Army, Navy, Airforce
Give a chance to the patriot in you. Joining the Army/Navy/Air Force or any other wing of the defense services can be exciting and high paying at the same time. You can join as technical staff by applying through the University Entry Scheme (UES), which requires you to apply on their respective websites or appear for the AFCAT (Air Force Common Admission Test). You can also apply for flying positions in Indian Air Force by clearing AFCAT.

Ø  Go Abroad for study/job
It is also a very good option to explore. If you choose to study abroad, you will get a lot of exposure and learning along with the education part. You might also be able to get a job at international locations if you have plans to settle abroad permanently in the future. You can also explore integrated opportunities abroad. Along with options of MS abroad you may explore options of MS+PhD and other research oriented courses. In addition, you could look at the various fellowships in research and development category available that may fascinate you too. You can also apply for the various scholarships which will fund your education partially or completely.

Ø  Start Your NGO
Feel fascinated when you see someone fighting for the rights of others?  Want to bring some positive change in life of others? You can work for an NGO or start your own, you can choose a career in journalism, opt for social research or do something in your own profession itself by helping people who don’t have access to it, e.g. if you are a lawyer, fight for the rights of the less privileged; if you are a doctor, treat people; if you are an engineer, innovate for the mass etc.
